How to Stay Calm in Uncertain Times — Backed by Neuroscience

We all have routines, and we tend to stick to them. We know what time we’ll wake up for work, when to pick up the kids from school, and that weekends are meant for rest.

But what happens when something unpredictable throws you off?

Uncertainty is one of the biggest stressors we face. It can cause physical and emotional pain and it’s hard to stay grounded when life becomes unpredictable.

But here’s the good news; this doesn’t have to be your default reaction.

What if I told you that, by gradually exposing yourself to uncertainty, you can rewire your brain to stay grounded when faced with adversity.

🧠 Behind the scenes🧠

Your brain thrives off prediction, the constant scanning for patterns and trying to predict what is coming next supports you in keeping you safe. When an outcome is unclear, the brain perceives it as a threat.

The two components that signal a threat when things are unclear are:

  • Amygdala: This area processes emotion and triggers stress responses when faced with uncertainty.
  • Prefrontal cortex: Handles decision-making and emotional regulation, but under stress, it struggles to think clearly.

Just like the gym, you can strengthen this area to become more resilient. Using it as a tool for you to feel grounded amongst unpredictability.
Here are some tried and tested (and science-backed) tools that have worked for me, and they might just work for you too.

🌱 Micro- exposure to the unknown

When the unknown or unpredictable event arrises, instead of avoiding it completely. Intentionally introduce small doses of uncertainty. This rewires your brain from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I can handle this’.

Try:

  • Saying yes to something spontaneous.
  • Starting a conversation with a stranger
  • Leaving a message unread before answering
  • Commit to a new project without knowing all the steps

🌱 Change the narrative

Instead of getting stuck in the ‘what ifs‘, ask yourself “What’s the next step I can take?”.
This simple question activates your prefrontal cortex (the rational part of your brain) helping you shift from fear and overwhelm to focused, action oriented thinking.

🌱 Turn your challenges into adventures

We often equate uncertainty with danger and while that can be true for certain situations that is not a blanket statement for all. When we change our perspective from ‘this is a challenge’ to ‘this is an adventure’, it allows us to expand our perspective and welcome new possibilities and solutions we might have not thought of.

It’s empowering because you gradually expose yourself to the unknown, you change the narrative from fearful thinking to action oriented thinking and you transform the experience into an adventure.

You can’t avoid uncertainty, not if you’re growing. But you can train your brain to move through life with understanding and more grace. The more you stretch that tolerance, the more possibilities open up.
